Take a Ride on a Heritage Blackpool Tram

With Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours you can enjoy an experience like no other, as you take a ride along the world famous Blackpool Tramway aboard a piece of moving history along the fantastic seafront of this world famous seaside resort.

Blackpool Heritage Tram

Up until 2011, the “Heritage” cars were the service fleet trams. Operating every day except Christmas Day, they travelled along the tram lines, carrying residents and visitors from A to B. A multi-million pound upgrade transformed Blackpool's tramway - the tracks were all relaid and a new, modern fleet of low-floor trams are now the service fleet.

However, the original Blackpool trams - with their distinctive 'clickety-clack' as they drive along - are much loved and as integral to Blackpool as fish and chips and the donkeys on the beach - so a core selection of trams from the original system were kept and returned to passenger carrying duties once more.

Many of these original trams are over 80 years old and have been retained and superbly restored. It's a unique experience as nowhere else in the UK can you still ride on a Heritage Tram on the line for which it was originally built.

Blackpool Heritage Trams run most weekends throughout the year, daily during most UK school holidays and, of course, operate our famous Autumn Illumination Tours where you can ride aboard one of the illuminated trams.

...................................................................................................

Trams for Hire

Along with our Heritage Buses, the trams are also available for hire to help you celebrate your special occasion.

So, whether you want to hire a tram, join us for one of our regular events or just enjoy a very special ride along Blackpool’s Promenade, we have something to offer for everyone.

...................................................................................................

FUNDRAISING APPEALS

All of the heritage Tramcars, are, by definition, old! They need tender loving care, maintenance, and in many cases restoration.

Many of them have been moved to different places, different collections, and different owners - so there are opportunities to being some of them back home, restore them and, one by one, add them to the operational fleet.

Blackpool Heritage Trust are currently fundraising for the restoration of two exciting additions to the fleet - they can't do it without your help!

Paisley & District tramcar no.16 of 1904 (later Glasgow 1016)

Paisley & District Tramcar no 16

Our 'phase one' project is to restore the 4-wheel truck from this tramcar to create a rolling chassis onto which we can then rebuild the body.

To complete this we need four brand new steel tyres, at a cost of £500 each.We have already received our first very generous donation of £500 – which will buy us one tyre. Can you help us to fund the other three?

Once we have the foundations of the tram in place, work can then progress towards rebuilding the body and recreating the missing components that will allow Paisley 16 to take its place on Blackpool's Promenade within a reasonable timescale.

dash panel from Paisley 16 from the later stage of its working life when it was Glasgow 1016.

This is a dash panel from Paisley 16 from the later stage of its working life when it was Glasgow 1016. You can see from the state of it how large a task is ahead in restoring it to as-new condition!

Any donation, no matter how big or small will help us to achieve the target and move us towards having a fully overhauled truck for this lovely little tramcar. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to Rigby Road when the work commences, to see the progress for themselves.

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram of 1963

The Blackpool Hovertram returned to us in September 2016 after almost a decade away and having spent periods of time in both Beith, Scotland, and Sunderland. Latterly in the ownership of the North Eastern Electrical Traction Trust (NEETT), the tram initially came back to us on a long term loan.

Blackpool Illuminated Hovertram 1963 at Rigby Road

However, NEETT have now presented us with a unique opportunity to actually purchase the Hovertram outright, which will allow it to remain as part of the Blackpool collection, in perpetuity. We feel that this is an opportunity that we should not miss, as it will reunite the entire 1960's illuminated collection under one umbrella and in their original home at Rigby Road.

NEETT have very generously agreed to accept a figure of around half of the £7000 that they have themselves invested in the tram in terms of purchase, moving and storage. We are therefore aiming to raise £3,500 to allow the famous illuminated Hovertram to stay in Blackpool, where it belongs!

Blackpool Hovertram

Again, any donation no matter how big or small will be very much appreciated, and will help us to secure the future of the Hovertram here in Blackpool. Donors of £500 or more will be invited to come and inspect the tram themselves, and to hear first hand about our plans for its future return to use.

Make a Donation

To donate to any of the restoration appeals, please send a cheque payable to “Blackpool Heritage Trust” to 16 Seventh Avenue, Blackpool, FY4 2ED, making it clear whether you wish your donation to support Paisley 16, or Illuminated Hovertram 735.

Alternatively, we would very much appreciate monthly standing orders. This form of regular contribution allows us to forward plan our projects, and will help us to build on our achievements so far and deliver the world class collection of Heritage trams that we all desire to see.

703 comes home! Balloon 703 returned home to Blackpool today following almost seven years away in the North East of England. 703 was originally acquired for preservation by the Lancastrian Transport Trust in 2009, and placed on loan to Beamish Museum following a repaint into fictitious Sunderland livery. 703 entered service at Beamish as their number 101 in October 2011, this number following sequentially from the highest numbered tram in the original Sunderland fleet. 101 was subsequently acquired by Beamish Museum, and became a regular performer over the next four years until a tyre defect forced its withdrawal from service during 2015. Although it was anticipated that the tram would be overhauled and returned to use at Beamish, it was moved to storage 'off rails' to free up track space in the museum's tram depot. Latterly joined by fellow Blackpool exile Brush car 621, a change of emphasis at Beamish saw both trams become surplus to requirements, and towards the end of 2016 they were both generously offered to the Blackpool Heritage Trust to bolster the growing Heritage operation here. 621 returned in December, but 703 has had to wait a little longer owing to its position 'off rails' at Beamish. However (and thanks to the success of our crowd funding appeal to bring the tram home), our engineers from Blackpool made the journey to Beamish yesterday to assist their own team in moving the tram back onto the track ready for loading, and effecting a temporary repair to the defective tyre. Following all of this effort, 703 arrived back in Blackpool at teatime this evening, and was swiftly unloaded and returned to Rigby Road depot for the first time since 14th September 2010. Welcome home old girl - we've missed you!

An interesting video showing the work involved in preparing 703 for it's transportation back to Blackpool from Beamish. This project has been made possible by our first ever crowdfunding appeal. Thanks to everyone who has assisted with this.

It's a busy #WorkshopWednesday today! Tram 101 was moved from its resting place in the tram shed and prepared for the journey to its new home at Blackpool. For more news and information on our transport collection, visit; http://beamishtransportonline.co.uk/

Latest news in brief! In the workshops, work is advancing nicely on open Boat 227, the interior of which is being returned as closely as possible to original appearance. With all seats and floor coverings stripped out, the opportunity is also being taken to re-wire the tram, which will see it fit for many more years of Heritage service on the tramway. We look forward to having 227 back in use in time for the main summer season this year. The big news for us this past winter has been the essential conservation work to our depot roof at Rigby Road. This has seen repairs to the structure of the front two bays of the depot including a completely new depot entrance pillar funded by Blackpool Council, and replacement lighting installed, jointly paid for by Blackpool Council and Blackpool Transport as their contribution towards the project. Blackpool Transport also paid to have two roof-valley gutters cleaned out to resolve issues of flooding. With this essential work now complete we once again have full access to the depot, and can finally carry on with the routine winter servicing of the Heritage Tram fleet. Thank you for bearing with us during this period, which has seen higher than normal usage of B fleet double deck trams on Heritage Tours – simply because these were some of the only trams we could access! It has to be said though, that the B fleet are exceptionally popular with the general public (and they have heaters), enabling that all attractive top deck ride on the only main line tramway in the UK. It’s sometimes easy to forget that these vehicles were built in 1934/5 and they have provided invaluable assistance to us in scaling up our operation to the highest pre-Easter level so far! 2017 is the 80th anniversary of the Brush Railcoaches, and we intend to celebrate this during the year with a number of special events. At present we have only 631 from the type available for use, but we do of course have plans to enhance the offer for other members of the class this year – starting with the recent announcement regarding pioneer 621! For those with a particular interest in the class, the Tram Sunday weekend (15th/16th July), and our annual Tramway Anniversary weekend (23rd/24th September) are dates to ensure you keep free in your diaries!

70 years since the last tram ran in Bolton Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours are marking the 70th Anniversary of the last tram running in Bolton by running the only surviving Bolton tram along the Blackpool Promenade on March 26th as part of our Winter Gold weekend. Electric trams first ran in Bolton on 9th December 1899, eventually replacing all of the horse trams that started from 1880. They served many of Bolton’s main roads and the network included Darcy Lever, Doffcocker, Dunscar and Halliwell with routes over the town boundary to Bury, Farnworth, Walkden and Westhoughton. The Bolton trams finally said goodbye on 29th March 1947 and the last trams ran on route 'T', to Tonge Moor. The last surviving tram is Bolton 66. Originally built in 1901 by the Electric Railway & Tramway Carriage Works in Preston, a company that later evolved into British Aerospace, 66 was rebuilt by Bolton Corporation and is preserved today in its final condition. After withdrawal from service, no.66 became a weekend chalet and then a chicken coop before being rescued by the Bolton 66 Tramcar Trust. Enthusiasts spent 18 years returning it to working condition, following which the last Bolton tram moved to Blackpool in June 1981, and has run here ever since! It is now nearly 36 years since 66 moved to Blackpool, and it has become a firm favourite in its new home. On 26th March it will run in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the closure of its home system, and on this special day it will proudly display the old destinations carried in service, including the last route 'T'. Come and join us to relive the old days of Bolton. Climb the stairs and ride on the wooden seats as your parents and grandparents did all those years ago. Bolton 66 will be operating route C on 26th March, and will be joined by at least five other Heritage Trams - so you can make a full day of it! Our trams call at special Heritage stops at Pleasure Beach, Tower/North Pier, Cabin, Bispham, Cleveleys and Fleetwood – buy your tickets on board from our friendly conductors!
