Take a look at Poulton town centre. It includes a market square, a small indoor shopping mall, with shops and places to eat lining the surrounding streets. It’s also home to the weekly Monday outdoor market.

The town centre has undergone period of change over the decades (centuries even). There’s been evidence found of human habitation in the area, dating back to 12,000 years ago!

Did you know? The Poulton/Carleton Elk, killed 12,000 years ago by humans, is in the Harris Museum in Preston?

In 1086 ‘Poltun’ was first recorded. That’s the Old English name for a farmstead by a pool or creek. By the 1450’s and the end of the Medieval period it was a thriving market town. The Market Cross dates to the 1600’s.

In much more recent times, the town has seen the redevelopment of the indoor Teanlowe Centre.

First, the former indoor Market Hall was changed into the current Home Bargains store. Then Booths Supermarkets carried out a redevelopment of the Teanlowe centre itself.

Independents and National Names

You’ll find a good mixture of shops in Poulton town centre. There are familiar, high street names and good quality independent local retailers sitting side by side.

Clothes, homewares, food, gifts, pet products and accessories can all be found in the town centre shops. Visit Ball Street, the Market Square, Breck Road and the pretty Chapel Street, which runs alongside St Chad’s Church Yard.

Weekly Market in Poulton Town Centre

October 2011 saw the return of the weekly market to Poulton Market Square.

It’s a historic town and the traditional market square was originally built for just that purpose. It rang out once again with the sound of trade at the first event on 26 October 2011, at a hugely successful first day.

Held in the pedestrianised market square area, the town now holds a regular weekly general market once again.

Come to Poulton-le-Fylde each Monday for a selection of goods including clothes, gifts, homewares, confectionery, food and snacks.

Open each week on Monday, come rain or shine, it quickly became a focal point for the town. The market transforms an otherwise quiet day into a hive of activity, throughout the pedestrianised town centre. Which was originally built as, you guessed it, a market square!

Speaking of St Chad’s, the Church is also worth a look. Especially in Spring, when the grounds come to life with thousands of beautiful crocus.

Car Parking in Poulton Town Centre

There’s plenty of free car parking on the recently improved and central Teanlowe Car Park.

There is also parking for shoppers at Aldi on Ball Street. Pay and display parking can be found off Hardhorn Road/opposite the Library and limited free on street parking is also available.

Public Transport

Good bus services cover the Poulton area. There are a number of stops in the town centre on Ball Street – find out more about Blackpool Transport here.

Poulton-le-Fylde is also where you’ll find the immaculate railway station. It’s just a short walk from the town centre, with a frequent service to Blackpool and Preston and beyond.

Cafes, Restaurants and Bars

Feeling hungry? You’re spoilt for choice for places to eat in Poulton. There are plenty of cafes with pavement seating, restaurants, food shops and takeaways.

Local Shops in the Community

Unusual in today’s society are the small groups of local shops which you’ll find in the local communities all over the Fylde Coast. Poulton is certainly no exception.

It’s so handy to be able to buy the necessities of life close to where you live without having to make a car journey. It also keeps the local neighbourhood alive and vibrant.
